Book Club Pals Inauguration March 2013

In an effort to formalize the “giving” aspect of our little group, Baby Book Club instituted “Book Club Pals” this month. Each month, we are donating the book that we are reading to a community organization that supports low-income families and children. Along with the book, we’ll be including all of the materials, ingredients, and instructions for a child (or two) to recreate the activities and snack of our book club meeting that month in their home with their parent or caregiver. The organization will choose a family each month to be our ‘book club pal” and receive our book and activities. We are very excited to be able to share the joy of parent-child reading, playing, and healthy snacking with other parents and toddlers in the area.

If you wish to recreate a similar bag for yourself or to donate, here’s what’s in the bag this month:

Book: Beautiful Oops! By Barney Saltzberg

Theme(s): Art, Making Something from Scraps/Mistakes

Activity: Make Contact Paper Collages
Supplies: Contact Paper, Scraps, A Piece of Construction Paper (we donated s couple sheets), Tape if Needed
Directions: Pull the backing off of the contact paper and place sticky side up (tape to a flat surface if needed). Give your child the scraps and demonstrate how to place an item or two on the sticky side of the contact paper. Allow your child to explore the materials and make the collage. When they are finished, stick the contact paper to a piece of construction paper to save the artwork. Be sure to supervise your child carefully to ensure that no scraps are put in mouth. Small pieces could pose a choking hazard.

Snack: Painted Toast
Supplies: Slice of Bread, Milk (we donated condensed), Food Coloring, Clean (not previously used) Paint Brush, Ice Cube Tray
Directions: Divide milk into ice cube tray. Color the milk with a small amount of food coloring to get a variety of colors of “paint”. Provide your child with the colored milk, bread, and paintbrush and encourage him/her to paint the bread. When finished, toast the bread in a toaster, admire, and eat!
