Each month, we donate the book that we read to a community organization that supports low-income families and children. Along with the book, we include all of the materials, ingredients, and instructions for a child (or two) to recreate the activities and snack of our book club meeting that month in their home with their parent or caregiver. The organization will choose a family each month to be our ‘book club pal” and receive our book and activities. We are very excited to be able to share the joy of parent-child reading, playing, and healthy snacking with other parents and toddlers in the area.
If you wish to recreate a similar bag for yourself or to donate, here’s what’s in the bag this month:
Book: Little Cloud, by Eric Carle
Theme(s): Clouds and rain
Activity: Play with cotton ball “clouds” and make a cloud picture
Supplies: Clear plastic tub, cotton balls, blue construction paper, glue
Directions: Pour the cotton balls into the tub and encourage your child to play freely with the “clouds”. Talk to your child as he/she plays (ask how the cotton balls look, feel, etc.). After your child has sufficient time to play, give him/her a piece of blue construction paper and help glue some of the cotton balls to the paper to make a cloud picture.
Snack: Cottage cheese clouds
Supplies: Cottage cheese, blue plates
Directions: Place a spoonful or two of cottage cheese in the center of the plate to create a “cloud”. Give to your child with a spoon to enjoy!
