Each month, we donate the book that we read to a community organization that supports low-income families and children. Along with the book, we include all of the materials, ingredients, and instructions for a child (or two) to recreate the activities and snack of our book club meeting that month in their home with their parent or caregiver. The organization will choose a family each month to be our ‘book club pal” and receive our book and activities. We are very excited to be able to share the joy of parent-child reading, playing, and healthy snacking with other parents and toddlers in the area. If you wish to recreate a similar bag for yourself or to donate, here’s what’s in the bag this month:
Book: The Little Mouse, The Red Ripe Strawberry, and the Big Hungry Bear by Don Wood and Audrey Wood
Theme(s): Berries (Strawberries in particular)
Activity: Berry Picking
Supplies: Gift certificate for $5.00 to *** Farm in ***.
Directions: The *** Farm is located at ***. This is a “pick your own farm”, so you can ask at the main entrance for directions and containers for the berries that are in season and that you want to pick. Since the book this month is about strawberries, these would be ideal to pick, but if they are no longer in season, choose any berries that interest you and your children to pick and eat. More information about the *** Farm is at this link: ***.
Supplies: Your freshly picked berries.
Directions: After picking the berries, find a spot in the shade to read the book and eat your pickings (assuming you selected berries that can be eaten raw). Alternatively, you may choose to head home, wash (and/or prepare) the berries and then read the book while you eat.
