Each month, we donate the book that we read to a community organization that supports low-income families and children. Along with the book, we include all of the materials, ingredients, and instructions for a child (or two) to recreate the activities and snack of our book club meeting that month in their home with their parent or caregiver. The organization will choose a family each month to be our “book club pal” and receive our book and activities. We are very excited to be able to share the joy of parent-child reading, playing, and healthy snacking with other parents and toddlers in the area. If you wish to recreate a similar bag for yourself or to donate, here’s what’s in the bag this month:
Book: Hey! Wake Up! by Sandra Boynton
Theme(s): Physical activity and movement
Activity: Toddler yoga and free play at a park
Supplies: Meet at a playground that has swings and slides and bring a blanket for the story and yoga.
Directions: Read the book and after completing the book read the line from the book below (bolded) and demonstrate the corresponding yoga pose for your child to follow.
“Yawn.” – Mountain Pose (stand tall)
“Stretch.” – Extended Mountain Pose (arms stretched up, look up to sun)
“Touch your toes.” – Standing Forward Bend (bend at waist, reach for your toes)
“Shimmy shimmy shimmy.” – Cobra Pose (lie on belly, lift head and shoulders, look up)
“Wiggle your nose.” – Downward-Facing Dog Pose (push back to hands-and-feet, and wiggle nose)
“Shout out loud:” – Standing Forward Bend (jump up to standing forward bend)
“GOOD MORNING SUN!” – Extended Mountain Pose
“HAPPY MORNING, EVERYONE!” – Mountain Pose
After the yoga, encourage your kids to play on the playground equipment just like the characters in the book.
Snack: “Broccoli Stew” (Soup) – as described in the book
Directions: We actually made a homemade broccoli soup for our meeting, but due to perishable nature of the soup and its ingredients, we have opted to provide a can of broccoli cheese soup instead. Prepare the soup according to the directions on the can and serve.
