Each month, we donate the book that we read to a community organization that supports low-income families and children. Along with the book, we include all of the materials, ingredients, and instructions for a child (or two) to recreate the activities and snack of our book club meeting that month in their home with their parent or caregiver. The organization will choose a family each month to be our “book club pal” and receive our book and activities. We are very excited to be able to share the joy of parent-child reading, playing, and healthy snacking with other parents and toddlers in the area. If you wish to recreate a similar bag for yourself or to donate, here’s what’s in the bag this month:
Book: The Very Busy Spider by Eric Carle
Theme(s): Spiders and webs
Activity: Spider-Web Lacing Cards
Supplies: Paper plate (with holes punched around edges), gray string attached to plate and with scotch tape on the end, spider sticker.
Directions: Guide your child to lace the string through the holes and across the plate to make a web. Tie in the back when finished. Give your child the spider sticker to place on the plate when web is completed.
Snack: String cheese web and fruit/pretzel spider
Ingredients: Black paper plate, String cheese, 4 pretzel sticks, strawberry—halved vertically, green grape—halved horizontally.
Directions: Ask your child to string the cheese stick and place strings randomly on the plate to create a web. On top of the web, arrange the strawberry half and the grape to create the body (strawberry) and head (grape) of the spider. See the cover of the book for guidance. Break the pretzel sticks in half to create 8 legs. Arrange the legs around the spider. Enjoy!
