December Book Club Pals

Each month, we donate the book that we read to a community organization that supports low-income families and children. Along with the book, we include all of the materials, ingredients, and instructions for a child (or two) to recreate the activities and snack of our book club meeting that month in their home with their parent or caregiver. The organization will choose a family each month to be our “book club pal” and receive our book and activities. We are very excited to be able to share the joy of parent-child reading, playing, and healthy snacking with other parents and toddlers in the area.

*In addition to our typical monthly donation, this month, we also donated books that we collected for gifts to children and families who utilize the same local organization.*

If you wish to recreate a similar bag for yourself or to donate, here’s what’s in the bag this month:

Book: Santa! by Rufus Butler Seder

Theme(s): Santa and indoor movement!!

Activity: Make giant activity dice and play dice rolling game

Supplies: Kleenex box, blank white paper, printout of activity phrases from the Santa! book, tape/glue

Directions: Cover the Kleenex box in white paper. Tape or glue one activity phrase on each side of the box. Take turns rolling the “dice” and acting out whatever phrase appears on the dice. For example, if the “dice” lands on “Hula-Hoop like Santa”, then move your waist to pretend to hula-hoop. Adults may need to demonstrate for kids.

Snack: Fruit and cheese Santa hats

Supplies: Toothpicks, strawberries, bananas, string cheese

Directions:  Wash and cut the stems off of the strawberries (but keep them whole). Slice the banana and string cheese into circular pieces. Lace one banana slice, strawberry, and piece of string cheese onto the toothpick (in that order) to create a “Santa hat”. Enjoy!
