June Book Club Pals

Each month, we donate the book that we read to a community organization that supports low-income families and children. Along with the book, we include all of the materials, ingredients, and instructions for a child (or two) to recreate the activities and snack of our book club meeting that month in their home with their parent or caregiver. The organization will choose a family each month to be our “book club pal” and receive our book and activities. We are very excited to be able to share the joy of parent-child reading, playing, and healthy snacking with other parents and toddlers in the area. If you wish to recreate a similar bag for yourself or to donate, here’s what’s in the bag this month:

Book: Press Here by Herve Tullet

Theme: Dots

Activity: Dot paint

Supplies: Cotton balls, clothespins, paint (blue, yellow, red), white paper, paper plate

Directions: Pour a little of each paint color on the paper plate. Clip clothespins to cotton balls. Use the cotton ball/clothes pin “dotter” to paint dots on the paper. You may fold the paper to create your own “press here” book with directions provided by the child if desired.

Snack: Yogurt banana dots

Supplies: banana, yogurt in three colors/flavors, wax paper, paper plate, plastic knife

Directions: Slice the banana into coins. Dip each banana coin into one of the yogurt flavors. Place all of the yogurt covered banana slices on a wax paper covered plate. Freeze for several hours or overnight. Remove, thaw just slightly, and enjoy! (These could be eaten without freezing if time doesn’t allow—they may just be a little messier!)
