July Book Club Pals

Each month, we donate the book that we read to a community organization that supports low-income families and children. Along with the book, we include all of the materials, ingredients, and instructions for a child (or two) to recreate the activities and snack of our book club meeting that month in their home with their parent or caregiver. The organization will choose a family each month to be our “book club pal” and receive our book and activities. We are very excited to be able to share the joy of parent-child reading, playing, and healthy snacking with other parents and toddlers in the area. If you wish to recreate a similar bag for yourself or to donate, here’s what’s in the bag this month:

Book: Strega Nona by Tomie dePaola

Theme: Spaghetti

Activity: Play in Spaghetti*

Supplies: Spaghetti, cooking oil, tub, tongs, bowls

Directions: Cook spaghetti according to package directions, drain, cool, and add cooking oil to prevent spaghetti from sticking together. Dump in the tub and play! Provide the bowls and tongs to the children for use with the spaghetti and if you have other kitchen items in your home that may add to the fun (strainer, spaghetti scoop, containers, etc.,) feel free to add in as well.

Snack: Spaghetti

Supplies: Whole wheat spaghetti, olive oil, parmesan cheese, paper plates, plastic forks

Directions: Cook the spaghetti according to package directions, drain, cool slightly, add olive oil and parmesan cheese. Enjoy!

*There are mixed opinions about whether food should be used for play when food for consumption is scarce. Using your best judgement given the situation, you may choose to provide this bag with just the snack option. If only one child is playing in the pasta and they wash their hands before beginning to play, it also might be fine to have them eat the spaghetti after playing.
