Special Series: Family Dinner Book Club-Paddington

When I discovered that Growing Book by Book was hosting a Family Dinner Book club with monthly books, activities, meal ideas, and service projects and inviting families to participate, I was SOLD! This is such a perfect fit for our book loving family and in the words of my oldest, “Now Daddy gets to have a book club too!” We’ll be reading along with the Family Dinner Book club and sharing our own replications or adaptations of the activities, meals, and service projects. Here’s what we did this month:

This month, we read Paddington by Michael Bond. We read the picture book version released by Scholastic and that was the perfect length for my 4 and 1 year old. Since Paddington has tea a couple of times in this book, we decided to have a Family Paddington Tea Party Breakfast. My 4 year old loved this activity so much that he has repeatedly asked when we can have another Paddington Tea Party and has since asked to read the book several times. I have said many times that bringing a book “to life” for kids can really help them develop a love for that book and this was no exception.

For our tea party, we prepared a take on strawberry tarts, which were mentioned in the book. We used THIS recipe almost exactly except that we used thawed strawberries that we had frozen this summer after we picked them. They weren’t quite as pretty as fresh, but they were much tastier than fresh are this time of year in our region. We also skipped the powdered sugar on top, but that didn’t stop anyone from enjoying these! These aren’t EXACTLY strawberry tarts, but they were close enough to get the idea, very easy to make, and not too unhealthy!

Of course, no Paddington Tea Party would be complete without orange marmalade on toast and tea! What a sweet breakfast we had while we read the book!

Later, the kids made shaving cream “maps of Peru” like Paddington tried to do in the bath!

We had lots of fun preparing the breakfast tea party as a family and are looking forward to next month’s Family Dinner Book Club! Thanks Growing Book by Book for the GREAT idea!
