May Book Club Pals

Each month, we donate the book that we read to a community organization that supports low-income families and children. Along with the book, we include all of the materials, ingredients, and instructions for a child (or two) to recreate (or adapt) the activities and snack of our book club meeting that month in their home with their parent or caregiver. The organization will choose a family each month to be our “book club pal” and receive our book and activities. We are very excited to be able to share the joy of parent-child reading, playing, and healthy snacking with other parents and toddlers in the area. If you wish to recreate a similar bag for yourself or to donate, here’s what’s in the bag this month:

Book: Go, Dog, Go!, by P.D. Eastman (Bright and Early Board Book version)

Theme: Stop and Go

Activity: Play a stop and go game

Directions: To help with inhibitory development, encourage kids to run/walk and then freeze when you say “stop.” They don’t move again until you say, “go.” Repeat as many times as they seem to be interested in the game.

Snack: Graham cracker “stop lights”

Supplies: Graham crackers, peanut butter (may be substituted for another “butter” or spread), strawberries, green grapes, paper plate

Supplies to provide from home: Knife, cutting board

Directions: Wash the fruit and remove stems, leaves, etc. Slice the fruit into small, round, thin circular pieces. Spread the peanut butter on a half of a graham cracker. Place one small round strawberry piece at the top as the “red light” and one small round green grape piece at the bottom as the “green light.” Be sure to cut the pieces small enough so that they are not chocking hazards. Serve.
