Each month, we donate the book that we read to a community organization that supports low-income families and children. Along with the book, we include all of the materials, ingredients, and instructions for a child (or two) to recreate (or adapt) the activities and snack of our book club meeting that month in their home with their parent or caregiver. The organization will choose a family each month to be our “book club pal” and receive our book and activities. We are very excited to be able to share the joy of parent-child reading, playing, and healthy snacking with other parents and toddlers in the area. If you wish to recreate a similar bag for yourself or to donate, here’s what’s in the bag this month:
Book: Pete the Cat: I Love My White Shoes by James Dean and Eric Litwin
Theme: Getting messy and stepping in Pete’s “piles”!
Activity: Pete the Cat sensory walk
Supplies: 4 aluminum pans, red washable paint, blue washable paint, mud, long sheet of paper
Supplies to provide from home: water to turn the dirt into “mud” and for the last pan, an old towel for wiping off feet
Directions: Lay out the long sheet of paper. Place the pans an equal distance apart along the paper path. Fill the bottom of the first tray with red paint (to resemble strawberries), fill the bottom of the second tray with blue paint (to resemble blueberries), fill the third tray with dirt and water (mud), fill the last tray with water. Encourage the children to walk the path and get their bare feet dirty just like Pete got his shoes dirty! Hold child’s hand if needed/desired because the paint, mud, and water can get slippery. Wipe feet off with the towels when complete.
Snack: Strawberries, blueberries, chocolate pudding (mud), and water to drink
Supplies: Strawberries, blueberries, chocolate pudding, water bottle, plates, cups, napkins, spoon
Directions: Wash the berries, cut the berries as needed for your child’s eating needs, pour the water, serve with the pudding, and enjoy!
